Skin Complaints

Whatever your skin problem, a lot can be done to help improve the skin and soothe the symptoms without resorting to products containing harsh chemicals.
Oregon Grape (Berberis Aquifolium), or Holly-leaved Barberry
Extract of Oregon Grape (Berberis aquifolium), from the North Western United States, has been strongly promoted for the treatment of a variety of dry skin conditions including psoriasis, and has been found effective in trials in Germany. Oregon grape contains in its roots berberine and oxyacanthine, which are said to contain anti-oxidant, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and moisturising properties.

Viola Tricolor Viola Tricolor is the fresh extract of the wild pansy herb. The whole herb, including the root can be used. It calms itching, soothes scalp irritations and improves blood circulation. For many years herbalists have taken advantage of its distinct action on the skin to help with eczema and other skin rashes.
Viola Tricolor contains saponins. These ’soap-like’ molecules are able to soothe inflamed areas of skin and, in part, are responsible for the soothing effect of the herb when applied externally. Viola also contains high levels of flavanoids, which have the ability to stabilise capillary membranes. This is an important consideration in inflammatory conditions of the skin.

Gotu Kola (Centella Asiatica)In the nineteenth century, Gotu Kola and its extracts were incorporated into the Indian pharmacopoeia, where they were recommended in the treatment of skin conditions such as leprosy, lupus, varicose ulcers, eczema, psoriasis and wound healing. Studies have also shown that they reduce scarring when applied immediately to burns.
