Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Artichoke
Artichoke (Cynara scolymus) leaf extract may be helpful in maintaining healthy cholesterol levels, and also may assist the gall bladder and liver to break down and eliminate alcohol and fats.

Turmeric

Turmeric (Curcumae longae) root extract has anti-inflammatory effects on the intestine, and promotes production of bile. Both herbs have traditionally been widely used to treat gastro-intestinal complaints, and are both well tolerated. As IBS symptoms include dyspepsia, for which both Artichoke and Turmeric are specifically indicated, a mixture of these herbs may be found helpful in the treatment of IBS. Studies indicate good results with no side effects.

Ispaghula Husk

Ispaghula Husk is a high-fibre natural material containing only husks from the plant Plantago Ovata. It works by absorbing water, thereby slowing intestinal transit time, increasing the bulk of food passing through the digestive tract and helping to stimulate bowel movements. It also lubricates the movements to some extent.

Ispaghula Husk is recommended for

  • Constipation, or when soft stools are desirable e.g. in the case of anal fissures or haemorrhoids, after rectal or anal surgery, or during pregnancy
  • Short-term treatment of diarrhoea
  • Irritable bowel syndrome, after excluding other reasons for the symptoms
