Butterbur: leaf extract yields positive hayfever results

Butterbur’s alleged hay fever-fighting properties have been eyed with scepticism by some scientists over the last few years, but the largest trial conducted to date suggests that an extract from the herb is as effective at alleviating symptoms as a common anti-histamine.

Hayfever, also known as seasonal or intermittent allergic rhinitis, is estimated to affect around 20 percent of people in Western countries - although the true figure may be higher as in many sufferers it is not severe enough to lead them to consult a doctor.

Artichoke
Artichoke (Cynara scolymus) leaf extract may be helpful in maintaining healthy cholesterol levels, and also may assist the gall bladder and liver to break down and eliminate alcohol and fats.

Skin Complaints

Whatever your skin problem, a lot can be done to help improve the skin and soothe the symptoms without resorting to products containing harsh chemicals.

Hayfever

Hay fever is an inappropriate term commonly used for the seasonal or perennial allergic reactions suffered by many people in temperate climates. Symptoms include sneezing, runny nose and obstruction of the nasal passages, sore throat and watering eyes. In extreme cases it can be severely debilitating. It is caused by an acute hypersensitive reaction to allergens (chiefly pollen) on the nasal mucous membranes, and has nothing to do with either hay or fever.Conventional remedies containing antihistamines are effective but frequently cause fatigue and drowsiness, and care must be taken by sufferers not to drive or operate machinery when so affected.

Herbal remedies can produce relief without the undesirable side-effects commonly associated with antihistamines.

A medical practitioner should be consulted before any herbal therapy is tried in order to eliminate any underlying serious medical condition.

A course of therapy with Butterbur petasin extract has been scientifically proven to be beneficial in the alleviation of hayfever symptoms.

Coughs & Colds

Echinacea, native to North America, is one of the most popular herbs used for avoiding coughs, colds and sore throats or at the very least minimising their consequences. It strengthens the immune system by stimulating white blood cell production and it inhibits the enzyme hyaluronidase, thus making cells less susceptible to viral take-over. It also helps regenerate cells that have been damaged. There are no known contraindications to Echinacea.
The above ground part of the plant Nasturtium contains Benzyl mustard oil (benzyl isothiocyanate), which has been shown in in vitro studies to have bacteriostatic, virostatic and anti-mycotic properties. Benzyl mustard oil is accumulated and excreted mainly in the respiratory and urinary tract. Clinical data have shown it to be effective in the treatment of catarrh of the upper respiratory tract and urinary tract infections. It should not be used in infants.
Herbal medicines such as Echinacea, Thyme and Aniseed have a long history of use in helping to relieve the symptoms of or prevent coughs.
